How marketers should interpret platform size
A larger potential audience does not automatically make a platform a better investment. Platform choice should start with customer behaviour, buying cycle, creative fit and the business outcome being pursued.
For consumer discovery, Meta and TikTok can offer broad reach and creative formats. LinkedIn may be more relevant for narrow professional audiences despite a smaller reported audience. YouTube can play a role in reach, education and remarketing. Search should be considered separately because it captures expressed intent rather than feed-based discovery.
A practical channel-selection framework
- Audience: can the platform reach the actual buyer or influencer?
- Intent: is the job to capture existing demand or create demand?
- Creative: can the business produce the format and volume the platform rewards?
- Economics: can expected margin and conversion rate support paid acquisition?
- Measurement: can meaningful outcomes be tracked reliably?
What not to do
Do not choose a platform only because it has the largest audience. Do not compare LinkedIn member counts directly with Meta or TikTok advertising reach. Do not treat ad-planning reach as monthly active users. And do not spread a small budget across every platform merely to claim omnichannel presence.
Northstar perspective
Social strategy should be a portfolio decision. A Romanian business may need one platform for demand creation, another for retargeting and search for demand capture. The right mix depends on the buying journey, not the platform leaderboard.
